Monthly Archives: July 2010

23 July 2010

I am an artist? is about questions.  How do I know if I am an artist? How do I know if what I do is art?  Who decides? Part of my own definition of what art is and what an artist does is about communicating.  Having something to say that you want someone else to hear and about wanting to have a conversation.

So for the next few weeks I am going to  find as many answers to my questions from as many different people as possible.  I will be wondering around various venues in Stoke-on-Trent asking people to fill in the following information for me:

What is your name?

What do you do?

What is an artist?

What is art?

No trick questions, just an honest, immediate response.

If you would like to take part (and I would love you too) but don’t live locally, you can still do so by sending your answers on a postcard to:

Michelle Hunter-Gray, Shop, 116 Church Street, Stoke Town, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs ST4 1BU

or by email to:

Alternatively, you could video yourself answering the questions and email that to the same address.

All the answers, all the cards and videos will form an installation in Shop and the project will culminate in a performance in October.

Watch out a web site version of the installation too!

Exciting new community art project…

Stoke-on-Trent now has it’s very own empty shop project, called simply Shop.  Based the centre of Stoke, right next to the archway leading to the wonderful Spode building.  A place for people to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat about anything from art to what’s going on in the town.  Lots of artists, both local and national are bringing everything from screenings to  interventions to the venue, not to mention the various residencies and workshops that will also be taking place.

Check out Shop website for more information and a list of events and dates for you diary.
